I am writing you to beg for your help for an urgent cause that will help Rotary, get us some good media exposure, educate some folks about another aspect of Rotary International, and be a great time. The President of a Florida Rotary Club, Erik Elsea, is canoeing the length of the Mississippi this summer to raise funds for ShelterBox. If you don’t know this organization well, look it up., They are a huge international partner with Rotary in responding to disasters. They bring in totes from pre-positioned caches around the world that provide shelter, and a week’s worth of supplies for families left homeless. In many cases they are the first boots on the ground from outside. As you can imagine, the schedule for this activity has been a bit flexible. But Erik will be in La Crosse on Sunday August 5th. Tami Woods and Terry Bauer have worked together to put together an all-Rotary (and bring friends!!) social at the Pettibone Boat Club from 2:30 – 5:30. Full details will follow shortly, probably with the help of Lyn Sheffer from the La Crosse club. Lyn said she’ll have an online signup, so that the organizers can get a rough headcount. Tickets will be purchased at the door, I believe, and will be $20, with part going to snacks and a drink, and proceeds going to ShelterBox. Next to polio, this may be one of the most important international efforts Rotary supports. Please help us raise some funds to lend a hand. Erik’s goal is to raise $100 per mile – that’s $255,200!! With all the Rotarians in our area, we should be able to contribute something decent. Bring your checkbook! You may want to make an additional donation. A ShelterBox kit will be on display for you to check out, and the organizers are working on some entertainment. Come out, bring your whole club, and have a good time for a good cause! Enjoy the surprises folded in the majestic Mississippi River Valley and Historic Bluff Country. Glimpse what the first westbound settlers must have encountered as you wind along the Mississippi River, once designated as the western edge of the United States.
Join us Saturday, August 11, 2018 for one of the following rides of the Sixth Annual Apple Blossom Tour.
The 25 mile, 50 mile and 74 mile tours will have you bicycling along the bluff top overlooking the Mississippi River. The challenging rolling hills and curving valleys are some of the best bicycling in the state. This year the rides will start and end at Abnet Field, Near the La Crescent Community Ice Arena.
If the challenging bluffs are not for you, the 15 mile ride to the west of La Crescent will be more to your liking. Also starting at Abnet Field, this route is renowned for the tranquil landscape of farmland and apple orchards.
In the mid 1800’s, Minnesota was no place to grow an apple. It was just too cold. John S. Harris developed a strain of apple trees that could withstand the harsh winters. His pioneering efforts brought native apples to Minnesota and helped to make La Crescent the “Apple Capital of Minnesota.” Come see what all the fuss is about… |

Andy Hughes, of TUGG, contacted Megan Tomlinson from The Great River Folk Fest and Moon Tunes suggesting we do a Flood Relief Concert. It will be on the Oktoberfest South Side Fest Grounds on Thursday September 13th. Pat Stephens has joined our planning committee. We will have music, food, refreshments, and accepting donations to help those families in our area that have had their lives turned upside down due to the flooding. More details coming soon. Watch, listen, and read the media outlets and our Facebook pages for further announcements but for now, get this date on your calendar and let’s help our family and friends that need support due to the flooding. Thanks to my fellow Oktoberfest Board of Directors for providing us the venue to host this fund raiser. Stronger Together!
